Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program that was created by Renaissance Learning that aims to engage students in reading, build transferable skills through reading, reciting, writing, and quizzing, and feel empowered through independent practice. It is one of the tools that we utilize at Veritas Christian Academy of Houston to encourage and challenge our students to find engaging and meaningful reading materials that build word skills and knowledge, strengthen imagination, and develop reading and comprehension skills which last a lifetime.
Through AR, three of our Middle School students accomplished a feat that many adults are unable to do. They were able to complete The Chronicle of Narnia series and take AR quizzes that pertained to an intricate knowledge of the various books in the series. Two of the three students who complete The Chronicles of Narnia series also completed reading and quizzes for the Lord of the Ring series with The Hobbit.
The Chronicles of Narnia series boasts over 320,000 words and contains 7 books. The Lord of the Rings series (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and the Return of the King) with the addition of The Hobbit boasts over 576,000 words. In fact, approximately 150,000 of those words are unique in and of themselves; remaining unused in any other literary work through the creation of a unique elfish language that is utilized throughout the series.
The three students who complete The Chronicles of Narnia series (all 7 books) are eighth grade students Charlotte and Grace, along with fifth grade student Virginia. Sisters, Charlotte and Virginia also completed The Lord of the Rings (all three books) and The Hobbit.
These three students are indicative of the broader scope of our student body; students who are deeply engaged in reading. After all, Rams Read!
