Fine Arts

At Veritas Christian Academy, the fine arts are integral to shaping well-rounded, thoughtful students who are prepared to glorify God through their talents.

From music and drama to visual arts, our award-winning Fine Arts program nurtures creativity, cultivates character, and fosters an appreciation for the beauty and truth found in the arts. By engaging in these disciplines, students learn to express themselves with clarity and grace while gaining a deeper understanding of great artists, composers, and performers throughout history.

Beginning in Pre-K and continuing through middle school, Veritas students are encouraged to explore their creative potential through various artistic opportunities. Whether performing on stage, creating visual masterpieces, or harmonizing in song, our students develop confidence and discipline that will serve them well for a lifetime.

As Sophocles reminds us, “Whoever neglects the arts when he is young has lost the past and is dead to the future.”

Veritas ensures the arts are appreciated and celebrated as part of a Christ-centered, classical education.

Music

Music and Movement

Music is an integral part of the Fine Arts Department at Veritas. The study of music begins with Music and Movement class in the Early Education Department in which motor skills training and development is paired with musical exposure. Exposure to music develops an appreciation in the students for the fine arts early in their Veritas experience.

Concert Choir

Concert Choir is an opportunity for students to develop both spiritual and musical expression. Students learn music theory, history, notation, and expression in their weekly classes. Middle School choral students expand their capabilities by continuing education in music history and notation, as well as learning to sing in harmony.

Conservatory

The Veritas Conservatory of Music is an optional program that provides students an opportunity to learn instruments (violin, piano, voice, trumpet, saxophone, etc.) in individual and ensemble settings taught by professional musicians. It seeks to bring each of its students to an intellectual understanding of the theoretical, historical, and stylistic aspects of musical practice; to relate each of these to the vast literature of music; and to demand the highest level possible of technical and artistic achievement in performance. The Conservatory’s instructors are accomplished musicians in their fields, having achieved the highest levels of musical training.

Visual Arts

At Veritas, fine arts is integral to the school’s classical curriculum. Weekly classes in the studio allow each student in our school to reapply their knowledge and express what they are learning in history, math, literature, Chapel, and the sciences in their own personal creative voice.

Students explore the art and techniques of ancient civilizations and the Renaissance, as well as modern movements in 20th-century art, including 21st-century art and the current use of technology to express the human story. Instruction in the formal elements of art is presented to students at age-appropriate levels. These include color mixing and theory, line, shape, form, composition, perspective, 2 and 3d design, chiaroscuro, and narrative/communicative aspects of visual art.

These techniques are utilized to create a wide array of art projects, including drawing, painting, sculpture, assemblage, collage, etching, printmaking, pottery, animated film shorts, and photography.

The art studio at Veritas is a place of discovery and risk-taking. Art lessons are designed at age-appropriate levels to give students the opportunity to practice deeper-level thinking skills. Creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills are used daily in individual and group collaborative projects. The studio is a safe and appropriate place for young minds to learn how to fail at something and persevere past that point to find new and unexpected ways to solve problems individually and as part of a team.

Our students’ work has been exhibited throughout the Houston area, including at the __Museum of Fine Arts, Houston__. Our students consistently receive top prizes at the ACSI Art Festival. We are very proud of our award-winning art department!

Theater and Public Speaking

All students at Veritas have performance opportunities as part of their Veritas experience. They are taught the fundamentals of performing in front of an audience. Students learn theater and performance etiquette, vocabulary, history, and experience a variety of classical works. As part of their exposure to theater, students may apply their knowledge through an annual production.
