Grades 1 and 2 build directly on the foundation laid in Kindergarten, taking the phonemic awareness and number sense our youngest students develop and turning it into real academic mastery. In math, students move from counting and simple addition to a confident command of their addition and subtraction facts, while learning to apply those skills to genuine problem-solving rather than rote calculation alone. By the end of second grade, students aren’t just reciting facts; they’re using them as tools to reason through problems.
These years also mark the beginning of our students’ formal journey into classical literature. Rather than reading disconnected stories, first and second-graders are introduced to well-loved authors and enduring stories. These are the kind of books that have shaped young readers for generations. This early immersion in quality literature builds vocabulary, attention span, and a lifelong love of reading, while planting the seeds of the literary sensibility our students will carry into the upper grades.
Grade 2 also marks a meaningful transition: students enter formal grammar instruction for the first time, learning to name and understand the parts of language they’ve used instinctively since they began speaking. Paired with continued spelling and penmanship work, this gives students the tools to write with increasing clarity and confidence.
All of this is guided by the Memoria Press curriculum, which grounds these grades in a classical approach: mastery of fundamentals through daily, cumulative practice, a rich diet of real books rather than textbook excerpts, and habits of attention and discipline that prepare students for the more rigorous grammar-stage work ahead in grades 3 and up.
